Training Steps

Preparation & Safety

Wash your hands: Apply hand sanitizer and allow to dry completely before donning gloves. Ensure all materials are within reach.

Gather supplies: Strep A test kit, sterile swab, patient specimen cup, personal protective equipment (gloves, mask).

Patient Assessment

Verify patient identity: Confirm patient name and date of birth using two identifiers.

Check contraindications: Ask if the patient has taken any antibiotics recently, which may affect test accuracy.

Sample Collection

Position patient: Ask patient to tilt head back and say "Ahhh" to expose the throat and tonsils.

Swab technique: Quickly and gently swab both tonsils and the posterior pharynx. Do NOT touch lips, tongue, or cheeks. Place swab in sterile cup immediately.

Test Preparation

Extract reagent: Open the Strep A test kit and add the extraction reagent to the specimen cup as directed by kit instructions.

Mix thoroughly: Mix the swab with the reagent for 10-15 seconds, then remove and discard swab in appropriate biohazard container.

Test Execution

Add to test device: Transfer the prepared specimen to the test device cassette according to kit instructions (usually 1-2 drops).

Start timer: Note the time - results typically appear within 5-10 minutes. Do NOT read results before the minimum wait time.

Result Interpretation

Positive result: Two lines (C and T) indicate Group A Streptococcus present.

Negative result: One line (C only) indicates no Group A Streptococcus detected.

Invalid result: No line (C absent) - test must be repeated with a new kit.
